Gold Titanium Piercing Jewelry: PVD vs Anodized - GEMORM

Gold Titanium Piercing Jewelry: PVD vs Anodized

Gold titanium piercing jewelry can get its color from a deposited PVD coating or from an anodized titanium oxide surface. These are different finishes, and neither makes titanium into solid gold. Before choosing a piece, check the stated finish, the underlying metal, the fit and whether your piercing is fully healed.

Two gold-colored studs can look similar in a photograph yet have very different specifications. This guide separates the color process from the jewelry construction, then uses current GEMORM products to show which details to compare before buying.

PVD vs anodized titanium: the buying differences

The most useful distinction is what creates the color. PVD deposits a separate material onto a surface, while titanium color anodizing modifies its oxide layer. A label that only says “gold titanium” leaves this question unanswered; look for a specific finish description rather than guessing from the shade.

What the finish tells you, and what still needs checking
Buying question Gold PVD titanium Gold-tone anodized titanium
How is color created? A thin film is deposited onto the titanium. An electrochemical process changes the titanium oxide layer.
Does it mean solid gold? No. Ask what the deposited material contains. No. The color does not require adding gold.
Can a photo identify the process? No; check the written specification. No; check the written specification.
What should the seller explain? Base metal, coating composition and which components are coated. Base metal, anodized finish and which components are titanium.
Can you predict a wear lifespan? Not from “PVD” alone. Not from “anodized” alone.
Does color establish suitability for a new piercing? No; assess the complete piece. No; assess the complete piece.

Process references: Oerlikon Fineparts on PVD and Titanium Finishing Company on titanium color anodizing. These explain manufacturing processes, not approval of the featured jewelry for fresh piercings.

What does Gold PVD mean on a titanium stud?

PVD stands for physical vapor deposition. Oerlikon describes it as a process that vaporizes a solid material in a vacuum and deposits it as a thin film on a component. For a shopper, the important point is that PVD names the process, not the exact coating recipe.

Do not automatically translate “Gold PVD” into “24k gold,” “titanium nitride,” or “nickel-free coating.” A seller must specify those details separately. An industrial coating’s performance also does not establish the suitability of a particular finished stud for contact with a healing piercing.

Sword CZ flat back labrets shown in gold-tone PVD and titanium silver finishes
The Sword CZ listing identifies the gold-tone option as PVD-coated titanium. The silver-colored option is titanium, not sterling silver. This is not a PVD-versus-anodized photo.

The Sword CZ flat back labret provides a concrete example: both color options have a titanium base, but the Gold Tone option has a PVD coating. Its product description also states that it is intended for healed piercings.

How does anodized titanium become gold colored?

Titanium color anodizing changes the oxide layer that forms on titanium. Titanium Finishing Company explains that this electrochemical process creates colors without dyes. The oxide layer and reflected light produce the appearance; a gold-colored anodized piece does not become a gold alloy.

This is why “anodized gold titanium” and “gold PVD titanium” should not be interchangeable product descriptions. One describes an oxide-based color process; the other describes a deposited film. Neither phrase tells you the gauge, the post length or the quality of the closure.

A color chart is useful for discussing a shade, but it is not an exact on-screen matching promise. Titanium Finishing Company cautions that displayed colors can be affected by the viewer’s screen. Compare photographs under similar lighting and ask for clarification when an exact match matters.

We have verified PVD wording for the gold options featured below. We have not verified an anodized gold option among these three products, so they are examples of PVD shopping choices, not a comparison of two GEMORM finish ranges.

Is gold titanium piercing jewelry real gold?

Gold-colored titanium is not solid-gold jewelry. The titanium remains the base metal, whether its color comes from anodizing or a coating. Even when a coating contains actual gold, that does not mean the whole stud has the composition of a solid 14k or 18k gold piece.

Read the description in layers: base metal → surface finish → stone → closure → dimensions. For example, “titanium, Gold PVD, clear CZ, internally threaded, 16G / 6 mm” describes five separate properties, not a single quality grade.

Likewise, “Silver” can simply identify the natural silver-colored titanium option. It does not necessarily mean 925 sterling silver. Check the material section before using either color name to infer the metal you will wear.

Can gold-colored titanium go in a new piercing?

Do not select initial jewelry by color alone. The Association of Professional Piercers’ initial jewelry guide considers material, surface quality, size and construction. It recognizes appropriately specified titanium, including anodized titanium, but a finish label cannot establish the suitability of every retail piece.

The APP also excludes gold-plated, gold-filled and gold-overlay jewelry from fresh piercings. Do not assume a retail “Gold PVD” label is equivalent to an acceptable solid-gold alloy. Ask a qualified piercer to assess the actual finished piece and its documentation before using it in a fresh or healing piercing.

Jewelry changes during healing are another separate decision. APP aftercare guidance advises leaving appropriate initial jewelry in place and having a qualified piercer perform changes or downsizing during healing. A piercing that looks calm on the outside may still be healing inside.

Three gold PVD styles: compare the details that change your purchase

Once a healed piercing’s requirements are confirmed, compare the decorative shape and the dimensions independently. The products below all list a Gold PVD option, but they do not share the same gauge choices, post lengths or closure. Matching their color does not make their parts interchangeable.

Style Gauge and post lengths Top and closure What to consider
Four-Petal Flower CZ 16G / 1.2 mm; 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 or 12 mm 2.9 or 3.7 mm flower; internally threaded; 4 mm back disc Choose the flower size, CZ color and wearable post length separately.
Sword CZ 16G / 1.2 mm; 6 or 8 mm Approximately 11.8 × 5.8 mm top; internally threaded The elongated top needs more space than a tiny round accent.
Prong-Set Round CZ 18G / 1.0 mm or 16G / 1.2 mm; 6, 8 or 10 mm 2, 2.5, 3 or 4 mm CZ; threadless push-pin Compare stone diameter separately from gauge and post length.

For a small botanical accent, start by comparing the Flower’s two top sizes. For a longer focal shape, inspect the Sword’s dimensions against the space around your placement. For a simple round sparkle, compare the Round CZ’s stone sizes and confirm the correct gauge before considering its finish.

Those are styling comparisons, not universal placement recommendations. If you need help with the post measurement, read our flat back earring post length guide. For the connection itself, see threadless vs internally threaded earrings.

Will the gold color last, and how should you care for it?

No single lifespan applies to every PVD or anodized piece. Without finish-specific wear testing for the products being compared, claims such as “never fades” or “lasts five years” would be guesses. Ask about the maker’s care instructions and finish warranty instead of treating the process name as a durability guarantee.

The APP notes that anodized titanium color may change with body chemistry or friction. That does not mean anodizing is the same as a deposited coating peeling. If a piece feels rough or looks damaged, have its condition assessed rather than trying to polish or refinish it while wearing it.

For the Flower stud, GEMORM’s jewelry-care instructions recommend mild soap and water, thorough rinsing and drying with a soft cloth. They also advise avoiding abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals and direct contact with perfume or cosmetics, especially on the PVD finish.

That is maintenance for the jewelry, not a prescription for cleaning a healing piercing. Follow your piercer’s instructions for the piercing itself. Do not remove healing jewelry to perform a cosmetic cleaning routine or use jewelry polish on the piercing channel.

Questions worth asking before checkout

  1. What is the base metal? Look beyond the color option and ask about the material documentation.
  2. Which finish creates the gold tone? PVD, anodized titanium and solid gold are different descriptions.
  3. What is coated? Ask about the top, post and back separately if the listing does not specify coverage.
  4. Is the complete piece appropriate for my piercing? A qualified piercer should assess fresh or healing placements.
  5. Will these exact dimensions fit? Confirm gauge, wearable post length, decorative top size and connection compatibility.

For a healed piercing, choose gold titanium piercing jewelry by combining clear finish information with the right fit and your preferred shape. If the finish or coating composition is unclear, ask before purchasing; an attractive photograph cannot fill in a missing specification.
